An invaluable member of the ‘People’s Five’

Close friend: Clarence “Tessi” Terceira was a member of the “People’s Five” with the late C.V. “Jim” Woolridge

Dear Sir,

Jim Woolridge and I had been friends for almost 50 years. We saw situations alike and I have lost a very close and dear friend. We were very close politically and always enjoyed each other’s company.

Jim and I were part of the “People’s Five”, who were against Bermuda going independent and against the McDonald’s franchise coming to Bermuda. We were taken to the Privy Council in London by the McDonald’s group and won there because we had an Act of Parliament in Bermuda supporting us.

Jim was more in touch with the community than most. Thus, Jim’s presence in the “People’s Five” was critical. He felt very strongly that Bermuda’s image should not be ruined by the proliferation of food franchises because Bermuda’s reputation was at stake.

Jim and I always consulted each other on political issues. Because of his personality, he was a natural for broadcasting, particularly in the political environment. Jim was able to talk about anything going on in Bermuda in a very clear and sensible way.

Jim will be missed for his cheerful optimism and friendliness. He made anyone he talked to at ease.

Our family extend our condolences to Jim’s wife, daughters and their families.
