Blinded by the light

Blinding headlights are not safe on our roads

Dear Sir,

I am deeply concerned that certain vehicles on our roads — both cars and motorbikes — are allowed to use Xenon lights.

These blue-white lights produce a brighter light than halogen bulbs and are so bright that they have been known to blind other drivers.

I know people who are actually afraid to drive at night because of the fear of these very bright lights. When I have signalled oncoming vehicles using these lights to dim them, my request is generally disregarded.

I wonder how the use of them passed the Transport Control Department, which is very strict on road safety. Who would allow such blinding lights that it makes it almost impossible to see roads that we all know in Bermuda are both narrow and winding?

This is a recipe for tragedy.
