Dear Sir,I refer to the recent letter from Kathy Zoll from St George’s. The pigeon problem is far greater every year. We reside in Harmon’s Bay, Sandys Parish.Every year, about eight or nine pairs of longtails nest in a nearby cliff face.About two years ago we noticed pigeons on the cliff face, and regrettably they have now completely taken over the longtail nesting site.This year, only one pair tried to nest, but all in vain. I contacted the Department of Environmental Services and two gentlemen came and viewed the area.Apparently, the only way to tackle the problem was by boat. I would encourage other readers who have noticed pigeons at longtail sites to contact environmental services. The pigeons breed nearly all year round, so within a short time most of the nesting sites will be taken over. On a slightly different note, perhaps the Government could support a tree-planting campaign with the help of parish councils and local schools. It was sad to see the large numbers of trees destroyed, in particular cedars, in the aftermath of Hurricane Humberto. DAVID BARBERSandys
