Proof that some men are more equal than others

Moment of truth: Donald Trump, the President of the United States, after the impeachment hearings (Photograph by Evan Vucci/AP)

Dear Sir,Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to go running about the countryside committing all kinds of crimes and knowing that you have the power in your grip to get away with them unchallenged?Wouldn’t it be nice to know that you have the power to be able to suppress all the evidence against you and have them thrown out of a court of law while knowing that you are guilty as hell?It has always amazed me how people who hold high positions are able to get away with committing crimes because of who they are, or the police are afraid to arrest them while knowing and having proof that they are the real guilty party. But on the other side of the issue, what about the innocent who don’t have a wall of unbending power to hide behind that are wrongly sucked up by the police and charged for committing crimes they did not have anything to do with?I have now reached the age of 71. When I was 11 years old, I was taken by two detectives to CID-HQ in Hamilton for questioning about charging someone who was supposed to have committed a criminal act against me. But in the end it was me whom they had beaten up in order to sign a false statement against the accused. In the end, the man went to jail based not on what he was supposed to have done to me, but based on his past record. Mr Editor, no one in the court cared to hear my story and in the end the man was sentenced to prison without much of a fight. The man and I had no power to stop the evil that had taken place in a court of law, and I find it amazing to be sitting at home today watching the shenanigans taking place at the impeachment trial going on in Washington and thinking about the little people who don’t have a snowball’s chance in hell of blocking any charge in the courts like Donald Trump has. It all just brought back memories of what had happened to me all those years ago. Mr Editor, in my case there was no one in court to represent me, there was no one to go to who would accept the complaints that I had. I was used, and in the end I was dumped out in the street to fend for myself. But here I sit watching Donald Trump using his power as President of the United States of America to block any evidence that could incriminate him while having a herd of lawyers polishing up his lies in order to get the public to accept his trashy diatribe. Boy, I guess I’m really supposed to envy this man. I wish I had the power and the ability to do what Trump is doing. Is he lucky or what?E. McNEIL STOVELLPembroke
