In loving memory of TN Tatem Middle School

Full of memories: T.N. Tatem Middle School (File photograph by Akil Simmons)

Dear Sir,I would like to submit a poem, which gives the perspective of the TN Tatem Middle School building after the decision to permanently close it as a school premises. The EndTo you I’m just a buildingJust some walls with mould infested ceilings But to others I was hope, I was home. And when it came to names, I didn’t lackTo Warwick children I was TN Tatem or Spice Valley But to their mothers, I was Warwick Sec I’ve seen babies turn to boys And return with children as menI’ve seen the evolution of toys From jacks and marbles to fidget things in children’s handsFor something that is stationary Oh, I’ve seen it allFrom computers with hunchbacks To them now hanging on the wall I’ve seen friendships turn to fightsAnd back to friendships againI’ve seen three generations of children dancing in the rainI’ve seen all the dancing trends And the music that is popFrom Michael Jackson’s Thriller to 2 Milly’s Milly RockThe children treated me so wellTheir spirits always kept me up to dateMuch unlike my caregiversWhom I can thank for my current stateI’ve seen lifelong friendships form That was my favourite partTo a building, lifelong friendships are our favourite kind of artIt is a beautiful creationThat, unlike us, can fathom any storm And creates lifelong memoriesSo a building can live on.AQUILAH FLEMINGPembroke
