Why are we hating on this young Bermudian treasure?

Unfair scrutiny: biochemist Carika Weldon has been subjected to undue second-guessing during the pandemic (File photograph by Blaire Simmons)

Dear Sir,I would like to say I cannot believe why there are people in our beautiful island that would not want to celebrate this outstanding young Bermudian. This evening, on the news of July 2, 2020, the Premier took a very dim view of the negative comments towards Carika Weldon — and very rightly so! Why would there be anything negative said about this wonderful young Bermuda treasure? She is more than qualified to do the job she is doing. She obtained her BSc (Hons) in Medical Biochemistry from the University of Leicester in 2011, and her PhD in Biochemistry from the same university in 2015, and is a genetics researcher at Oxford University. There are not too many people who can do any better than that. So, rather than being negative, let us hail this young woman for what she has accomplished and be thankful that we have her back in Bermuda to help us get through this coronavirus pandemic. Here’s to all those other well-educated and very talented Bermudians who should also be celebrated.WILL MAYOWarwick
