Tonight’s party will be a lot of fun
Firstly, many apologies for the false alarm last week on the Bridge Club Summer Party! I had been publicising it for so long that once August came I thought it must be here.
The Party is, of course, tonight and promises to be a lot of fun — the Club has sent out the list of those attending and 50 is a big number given that many members are off island over the summer.
As always, the event will be well planned and should be a lot of fun.
There will be no bridge played at the party, so here is a nice little hand to keep you going
This hand came up in a rubber bridge game in the Bahamas many years ago and declarer was s brilliant and colourful American who used to spend most of his days playing high stakes rubber bridge — and whose name I have forgotten!
For the purposes of the column I will call him Bobby!

Bobby, sitting South, opened 1NT and partner had an easy raise to 3NT — West led the heart King.
With AJ6 one would normally duck this trick but Bobby realised that this could be fatal as West would have to switch and the obvious switch looking dummy was a spade which would not be good.
Having arrived at this conclusion he smoothly played the heart Jack under the King at trick one!
Look at the effect this has on West — convinced that declarer started with AJ doubleton in hearts, leaving partner with 832, West continues with the heart nine — curtains!
Declarer won this and played a club which East won but with no hearts left to play the contract made an easy ten tricks and a lot of money for our Bobby.
Should West have seen through this?
Yes, but only with an expert partner who would have played the heart 8 to start a peter showing two or four cards; if declarer had the AJ doubleton, East would have had the 832 and would have played the 2 at trick one to show an odd number of cards.
That’s all-good in theory but declarer took his only chance to fool the opposition and it worked — a stroke of sheer brilliance!
