A Bermudian make-up artist is offering a luxury mobile service to clients.

Donika York started her mobile business called Basic Beauty Studio more than six years ago when she saw a niche in the market.

She believes mobile is a more lucrative idea to grow her business, as it offers something different to the island.

“I consider mobile more successful,” Ms York said. “I am able to come to you in the privacy of your own home or wherever you may be.

“People tend to go to formal events and get dressed in one spot — that’s part of the luxury service that others aren’t offering,” she said.

Ms York has always had a passion for the art of make-up.

“I used to do my face and play around with different looks when I was younger, I liked to see what I could achieve in going from day to night looks,” she said.

“Other people wanted me to mimic what I was doing on them. I am still learning and every new face is a canvas.”

In 2011 she decided to take the plunge and put everything into perfecting her craft and building her business.

Ms York has seen success and rapid growth in her client base.

At first she admits she did not need to do much advertising as most recommendations were through word of mouth.

She caters to groups of up to four people at a time and can spend at least 45 minutes on each person depending on the occasion.

Ms York has clientele from different walks of life, from corporate to stay-at-home mothers.

Most of her client base are those who want make-up applied for events such as parties, weddings, photo-shoots, the holidays and more.

With the holidays fast approaching she advises people to book in advance as spots fill up quickly.

Ms York has exciting things happening in the future and is looking forward to the continuing growth of her business.

“What’s next for me is to train others who aspire to become make-up artists, and expanding the brand both locally and internationally.”

She also offers tutorial services for those who want to learn how to apply make-up.

“My overall message is for people not to be afraid of make-up — it’s an art that is expressed through you, like changing hair and clothes. It’s an accessory for the face,” she added.
