A new self-storage facility has opened in the East End.

Bermuda Self Storage, located on Ferry Road in St George’s, is inviting new customers from both commercial and residential sectors.

Kerry Davison, owner of the facility believes starting this business was the next logical step for her.

“My family owns the Davison’s Group of Companies, Bermuda Kitchen & Baths, Bermuda Lumber Company and Kitchen Installations Ltd,” Ms Davison said.

“My father started Davison’s of Bermuda 55 years ago, my sister Laura Pitt runs that side and I run the construction and the Bermuda Lumber Company and now Bermuda Self Storage.”

Safety is one of the top priorities for the company and Ms Davison aim was to make it comfortable for everyone.

She added that the operation had “state of the art security” for protection of the items held within the facility.

“All the staff here will be alerted when someone enters the building and we all have the cameras installed on our mobile phones,” Ms Davison said.

“We have gate access with the keypads as well.”

She said that one growth driver for the business was the popularity of people renting out their properties on accommodation rental websites like Airbnb and putting some of their personal items in storage while others were staying in their homes.

The growth in the market is borne out by statistics from the Bermuda Tourism Authority, which show that 26,691 visitors rented a home or apartment in 2017 — up by 53 per cent from 2016.

While those numbers received a boost from the America’s Cup, the trend has continued this year, with 11.6 per cent growth in the number of visitors who stayed in rental accommodation through the first seven months of this year.

All 48 units are air-conditioned and climate-controlled to prevent mould.

The units range in size from those needing a small place to those storing large items such as appliances.

There are 40 remaining units available.

Ms Davison said that being based in the East End helped her to keep her prices competitive.

The storage facility’s opening hours are Monday to Sunday, 8am to 6pm, but are flexible, Ms Davison added.
