Ferries to St George’s for Disney visit

A special Dockyard-to-St George’s ferry will run this Saturday, giving East End businesses an opportunity to benefit from the first visit of a Disney Cruise Line ship to the island.

The special transportation has been organised by the East End division of Chamber of Commerce, partnering with the Ministry of Transport, Marine and Ports and Beach Boys of Tobacco Bay and Clearwater.

The Disney Magic cruise liner, set to visit the island five times this year on voyages from New York, is expected to bring about 2,376 passengers and 945 crew. The 966ft vessel will moor at Dockyard.

“This collaborative public-private effort demonstrates an exciting turn which calls on full island-wide support to drive momentum and seize this unique opportunity,” Belcario Thomas, the Chamber’s East End division chairman, said.

The ferry holds 350 passengers and will run four times a day.

It is hoped that businesses and residents alike will welcome the Disney visitors and that the initiative could encourage regular weekend ferries to the Olde Towne.

“Ferries do not usually run on weekends in St George’s,” Mr Thomas said. “Transport providers have historically pointed to unproven market demand, meanwhile many vendors, witnessing low traffic and limited transport options, further reduce supply thus limiting opportunity to create a weekend draw that merits investment.

“A classic chicken and egg situation, providing a stalemate that underwhelms market expectations, stymies growth and, generally, choices of lifestyle for everyone,” he said.

“This Saturday, all of Bermuda has the opportunity to help reverse this trend, with encouragement to swing by the east for a mini day-cation.”

Mr Thomas said many of the town’s retail stores, bars, restaurants, tours and attractions will be open.

Tobacco Bay, will be hosting its complimentary second annual Mermaid party from 12pm to 6pm with themed food, beverages and guest performances.

Mr Thomas added: “Residents and island guests alike have a great opportunity this weekend to enjoy a mix ‘n’ mingle, supporting area vendors, engaging Disney guests and supporting St George’s.”

News of more planned weekend ferries this fall will be released at a later date, Mr Thomas said.
