After a string of operators, the aquarium’s Azu Beastro is now under the management of Take Five Ltd.
The restaurant group which operates the Buzz cafés around the Island and the Devil’s Isle Café in Hamilton, aims to open “Buzz Beastro” in mid March.
Previous management, Fourways Inn, struggled with the aquarium’s low winter foot traffic, but Take Five Ltd is not worried.
Take Five Ltd general manager Jason Berwick said: “When the aquarium approached us to take the concession over, we were really more interested in supporting them as a charity and as a worthy tourist resource, much needed in Bermuda, as opposed to looking at the aquarium as a financial business for ourselves.
“It also gives us the ability to collaborate with them and their events and marketing team to grow the aquarium as a unique Bermuda event space.
“Yes, the foot traffic is an issue in winter. We totally understand that, and that will continue to be an issue. We have looked at the numbers and we can live with the fact that the business struggles at that time of year and prospers in summer.”
The menu will be a limited Buzz menu because of the size of the location, but will include: wraps, paninis, classic grass-fed beef burgers with a vegetarian homemade black bean option, quesadillas, the burrito bowl concept, salads and sandwiches.
Take Five’s aim is to offer more healthy options than was offered before, but there will be chicken tenders and fries.
“Kids love them,” Mr Berwick said.
There will also be a shortened version of their shake and smoothie menu: Devil’s Isle coffee, frappes and iced coffee beverages, ice cream and their all natural Italian sodas.
“We have plenty of options,” said Take Five social media co-ordinator Kathryn Morley. “It is very important at the aquarium to have fast quick food. A lot of people want to pop in and out.”
She planned to promote the café more through social media to help raise its profile.
“Buzz is known island-wide,” she said. “We are able to supply an experience in food to the consumer.”
And she said the café’s water view was definitely a plus.
“The view is beautiful,” she said. “It adds to the experience. You are not just having healthy food but enjoying the beautiful atmosphere. It is a beautiful place to take someone.”
Take Five is still working on the opening hours for the Buzz Beastro, but think it will be open from 10am to 3pm during the week and 9am to 3pm on the weekends.
“There may be restricted hours in the winter, but it will be open seven days a week,” Mr Berwick said.
