Dejh Simons only moved to England two months ago to begin nursing studies in Coventry, England. Now with the spread of Covid-19, the future of her classes at the University of Coventry is in question. “It’s still up for debate with the Government,” the 23-year-old Bermudian said. “It should be determined soon whether we will continue with classes or not so as of right now I am still going to class. I have exams in two weeks.”The silver lining in the crisis is that her natural skin care line Bath Cove is doing well. Seeing an opportunity she recently added hand sanitiser to her product offerings of body scrubs, soaps and shea butters. “I have only been advertising for three days,” she said. “Already I have 25 orders. And the orders are increasing as word spreads.”She said her rose infused hand sanitiser has the same benefits as sanitiser in store but provides more moisture, a better smell and has benefits for skin as well. Now she’s thinking of adding a natural liquid soap to the items she sells.Ms Simons started Bath Cove back home in Bermuda last year, out of necessity. “I can’t use any skin care products with a lot of chemicals,” she said. “My skin is really sensitive and I break out.”She went online to do some research, then started making natural skin products herself. She didn’t have any disasters, but it took a lot of trial and error. She figured out how to make the products fairly quickly, but the challenge was to keep them consistent. “My friends would try them out as well,” she said. “That was in the beginning. As they were testing it out they would say oh you know this is really good. You should sell it. I would give samples to my family as well for them to test it. Everyone enjoyed it, so I made it a hobby.”She started with body scrubs, then branched out into body butters and bath salts. She kicked off Bath Cove last November.“The biggest challenge was doing the Fun Zone Christmas Market in December at Xtreme Sports in St David’s,” she said. “That was my first time actually presenting it like that. I didn’t know how many people to cater to or how to set it up to make it look attractive.”Some of the money from the business is helping her fund her university studies, and the rest is going back into the business to create new products. She now makes the Bath Cove line in her apartment in Coventry and ships it back to Bermuda. “About 90 per cent of my clients are in Bermuda, because I just moved to Coventry,” she said. “I don’t have much experience out here as far as advertising. I just talk about it with my school friends at the moment. We’ll see where it goes from there. I think the biggest struggle is just figuring out the shipping methods and which one is more reasonable and how to get it there the fastest.”Her products are strictly hand made, natural and organic. “They are very easy on the skin,” she said. Her best sellers are her sugar scrubs and soaps. “With the sugar scrubs, the most popular is the oatmeal, cinnamon vanilla one. Another popular one would probably be the shea butter. People ask me all the time if they can eat them, especially the fresh fruit one.”While the line is organic, this probably isn’t a good idea.“They have great scents,” she said. “When people walk into my apartment they always say how nice it smells.”In the very far distant future, after she is established as a nurse, she’d like to open a shop.“Bath Cove can help people because I have products that really help with eczema and dry skin,” she said.Currently, she is working on getting Bath Cove into Bermuda stores. Her nursing classes are a lot of work, but she still finds the time to make Bath Cove items. “I have learnt how to balance it,” she said. “I do take more time for school work but I still have that time to make products and brain storm new things about my products.”She uses all of her products herself. “I especially use the body scrub with turmeric,” she said. “That one is popular because it is good for the dark spots on your face and under your eyes and all over the body. It gives you a complete glow.”• For more information about Bath Cove see her on Instagram @bath.cove, or Whatsapp her on 704-3777 or e-mail dejhahsimons@icloud.com
