Windybank Farm will this week be holding special market hours to help people particularly vulnerable to Covid-19, get their fresh fruits and vegetables.Seniors and people with underlying health conditions are invited to shop at the farm on Middle Road in Smiths from 1.30 to 3pm on Friday.Ms Julie Grayston-Smith, who runs the Windybank market with her husband Malcolm Smith, said at first they were a little undecided about what to do to help their customers, an estimated 40 per cent of which are over 65.“We were back and forth on whether to do boxes, or whether to take orders over the phone,” she said. “Because everything has happened so fast, there has not been a lot of time for planning. We thought we would start with this.”She hoped the special hours would make these groups a little less nervous about coming out to get their fruits and vegetables. “We encourage people to come and choose their own and not feel stressed,” she said. “It does get quite busy around here.”She said last Friday was particularly busy.They have also put their cash table outside in the fresh air, rather than having it indoors, as they normally do. But she said if seniors want to come during regular hours on Saturday, they are welcome. “We are not going to turn them away,” she said. “We will see how it goes this week, and we may transition into boxes next week. There is so much selection it is hard to limit people to a box.”The market will be open to all from 3 to 6pm on Friday and Saturday mornings from 6.30am to 12.30pm.
