Last year Burrows Lightbourn Ltd introduced a new data-processing system and decided to re-plan its online store, wineonline.bm. The site is now up and running and one of the features that you can click on is “monthly specials”, where you will find quite an extensive list of spirits and wines.Here are some of the wines featured at this time although I hesitate to mention some of them as I have been buying them for our home.We had a bottle of Benzinger Family Merlot 2014 with dinner last night. It has been reduced from $26.80 to $19.50 (#6648) and even better, Burrows Lightbourn still give a 10 per cent discount if you buy a case of twelve, so you can pay as little as $17.55 a bottle.Benzinger farm the grapes for this wine sustainably and the flavours of black raspberry and ripe plums have reached an ideal plateau at the age of six years.Bernard Defaix 2015 Chablis half-bottles (.375ml) have been a popular restaurant item, so you can understand why a decision has been made to reduce stocks.Defaix is definitely among the top ten producers of this dry, crisp chardonnay from vineyards that surround the village of Chablis. It is said that the deep chalk soils — leftover sea shells from the Jurassic Period — impart a “steely” and “gunflint” character to the wine.Didier and Helene Defaix use stainless steel, so there is no influence of oak and the pure chardonnay fruit shows through. The Wine Advocate gives it 89/100, calling it “a very fine chablis” and adding that “you cannot go wrong here”. Stock #5849 was $18.25, but is now $14.85. A case of 24 may be a bit much, but this would cost you $13.37 a bottle. Lovely chance to enjoy a couple of glasses of a crisp, complex white.Beaulieu Vineyards is an historic Napa Valley winery, but they also make a range of inexpensive “Coastal” wines and we have carried rather large stocks of these.They have proved to be very popular in restaurant and hotel by-the-glass programmes. No need to explain why stock reductions are warranted here.We are featuring BV Coastal merlot 2017 #7084; pinot noir 2017 #7078; cabernet sauvignon 2017 #7081; and 2018 sauvignon blanc #7079 for $14.90. The cost was $18.70. The case price is $160.92, or $13.41 a bottle. Now that you are considering (hopefully) some Monday to Thursday night wines, you may be interested in a couple of weekend ones. Dry Creek Vineyards hold a special place in my heart because it was these lovely wines that showed me what California could do back in 1980.In fact, my wife had to “put me under heavy manners” and insisted that I enjoy something else once in a while.We both became friends with David Stare, who founded this winery in Dry Creek Valley, which is in Sonoma. This was the first winery in Dry Creek after prohibition and Bermuda was their first export market.We are selling off Dry Creek 2014 merlot as the winery has decided to no longer produce this wine and I suspect that they need this grape for their other red blends.You can read on our site that a tasting panel awarded this wine a superb 93/100 and goes on to say, “juicy, opulent palate. Robust with spiced black fruit as its anchor”.On that note, let me say that all Dry Creek wines feature sailing craft on their labels and Dave Stare has actually sailed to our island. I remember telling him that if you approach from downwind (as I have done) you can sometimes actually smell the flowers before you can spot Bermuda! Stock #6508 was $31.05 and is now $24.25 or, if you buy a 12-pack, only $21.83. Lovely treat!There is another 93-pointer in the mix and it is Eponymous Napa Spring Mountain 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon. I have always felt that there is not a more perfect time to enjoy a wonderful red than when it is ten years old.It still has some of the excitement of youth, but is starting to show the advantages of maturity. This wine exudes complex notes as soon as the cork is pulled. Rich dark fruit and berry characters with hints of cedar, olive and a clean earthiness that are attributed to top Napa cabernets, add to the intriguing aromas.Held to the light, this elegant wine shimmers with a stunning deep purple-inky colour that announces the intensity of the grapes.The palate has good structure and grip with more than ample tannins, although nicely balanced by fruit and spice.This 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet is rich, full and round from the initial taste and continuing as it fills the mouth, leading to a long, lingering, polished finish. Serve with red meats, lamb, cheeses. Stock #7986 was $57.90 and is now $39, or $35.10 by the case.Well that is a few to get you stocked up and it is well worth taking advantage of these specials.• This column is an advertorial for Burrows Lightbourn Ltd.
