The National Museum of Bermuda last week played host to an international seafaring history conference.

More than 65 delegates were on island for the 2018 Annual Conference of the Council of American Maritime Museums.

The event, held at Bermuda College, included representatives from the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, Los Angeles Maritime Museum, and Vancouver Maritime Museum.

Natural disasters, marine archaeology, and the need for good connections with communities to remain relevant were some of the topics discussed by attendees.

A spokeswoman said: “The conference provided local institutions an opportunity to establish new relationships with international institutions and exchange their experiences and knowledge.”

Elena Strong, executive director at the NMB, said there was a “strong and deep” local interest in Bermuda’s maritime heritage.

Ms Strong added: “The key is to make this history relevant, accessible and explore the stories which have traditionally been marginalised.”
