Young Achiever: MSA pupils think tourism
Thinking outside the box paid off for a trio of Mount Saint Agnes Academy students, with their tourism video coming top in the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s school video competition.
The 17-year-old students Dorian Frith, Blake Horseman and Brianna Lopes won a cruise courtesy of KS Watersports for their clip celebrating April as Hospitality Month.
Blake said the group opted to take a different approach to the task of “A Day in the Life of ...”, aimed at highlighting the most unique tourism job.
The Grade 12 student said: “We wanted to be different from everyone else, so we chose something broad and unique, because anyone and every one of us contributes to our island in different ways.”
Added Brianna, also in Grade 12: “The idea was that we are all ambassadors. It consists of so many things, not just one specific job.”
Dorian, from Grade 11, explained: “We preferred to show rather than tell.”
From the end of February into March, the group went around the island filming at locations such as hotels, the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, the wreck of the Vixen off the West End, and Hamilton Harbour.
Blake, who works on the glass-bottom boat Reef Explorer, came to the job with hospitality experience of his own.
The three, who all hail from Smith’s, shot footage using their phones and carefully pieced a video together, a little over two minutes long, into a narrative where Bermuda’s scenery told the story, guided with captions.
Lisa Stevens, the school’s audio and visual teacher, told The Royal Gazette: “Normally when you’re thinking of tourism, you think of the most visible jobs such as bartenders or waiters.
“One of the reasons their video was chosen was their perspective that all Bermudians are ambassadors.”
The videos were submitted by mid-April, with the winners announced on April 30 at the BTA’s visitor centre on Front Street, where all the videos were shown. Dorian admitted: “I really didn’t expect it.”
Blake added: “There were some really good videos — we were grateful and lucky to win.”
Brianna credited their success to “working as a team”.
Their prize will be a 90-minute water tour, when the group will be filmed by the BTA.
Davida Roberts, the BTA’s learning and development specialist, said the authority was still considering “different ways to showcase the videos”, which have been shared as well on social media.
Tourism in Bermuda can only grow with the support of its residents, particularly young people, Ms Robert said,
She added: “As they begin to look to what their futures hold, we want them to see that the tourism industry in Bermuda is a fun and appealing career option. By tapping into the vast creative potential of our young people, we hope to introducing them to some inspiring and fulfilling careers that they may not otherwise be aware of and how each role contributes towards the success of tourism.”
