The founder and former director of the National Museum has been given an award by the oldest archaeological group in the world.

Edward Harris was honoured by the Society of Antiquaries in London for his Harris Matrix and associated methods which set the standard worldwide for recording archaeological excavations.

The Society of Antiquaries Salon internet magazine said Dr Harris “became the founding director of what would later become the National Museum of Bermuda, a 16-acre site and one of the largest such institutions in the Americas” in 1979.

“He was elected a fellow of the society in 1982 and was awarded the Society Medal in 2018 in recognition of his significant contribution towards the society’s research grants.”

Dr Harris was awarded the medal in London last month.
