Two summer programmes for schoolchildren have ended.
The Summer Internship Programme and the Summer Employment Programme both wrapped up last week.
Lovitta Foggo, the Minister of Labour, Community Affairs and Sport, said the four-week programme gave young people the chance to work shadow professionals in their field of choice.
She added: “As a result, our students are better equipped to make more informed choices about their future studies and career path.”
Ms Foggo said that 87 participants from senior, private, homeschools and overseas boarding schools had taken part this year. She added said that the latest group had this year received a modest pay increase.
Ms Foggo added: “Historically, students were paid a total of $400 for four weeks of work.
“We recently re-evaluated the SIP and can advise that the students who completed the full four weeks will receive $1,600 instead, which equates to $400 for each of the four weeks.”
Ms Foggo said the scheme was “crucial to the success of our college and university students”.
She added: “The SEP is an excellent opportunity to build experience in their respective areas of study.
“Many also find the exposure to real-world work experiences solidifies their chosen career path. In addition, several students use the programme for college credit towards fulfilment of their coursework.”
Ms Foggo said that several former programme participants had gone on to find full-time employment with the employers they were placed with over the summer.
She added: “We are implementing a process to track employment outcomes resulting from the summer programmes.”
