Three officers represented Bermuda’s police this month at the 2019 World Police & Fire Games in Chengdu, China

Pc Jeana Jones ran in the 5km cross country event, while Pc Kyle Godfrey competed in three track and field events: the 100 metres, 400 metres and long jump.

Pc Ralshon Douglas participated in ten pin bowling.

Ms Jones won a silver medal in the women’s 55 to 59 age group, with a time of 38 minutes and 15 seconds, while Mr Godfrey, her son, came fourth in the men’s 18 to 29 long jump with a leap of 6.74 metres.

He also reached the semi-finals of the 100 metres with a first round time of 11.35 seconds, followed by a semi-final time of 11.54 seconds — and came fourth in the first heat of the 400 metres with a time of 54.95 seconds.

Ms Jones recalled the opening ceremony “was like being at the Olympics”.

She added: “There were displays of various police and fire vehicles, celebrities including Jackie Chan — even the president of China attended.

“Participants from so many other countries also attended; Brazil, Nigeria, Spain, France, Bahamas, Trinidad, New Zealand, United States, the UK, India, just to name a few, as there were many more countries represented. There were also fireworks as the grand finale, which was an amazing display.”

Ms Jones said: “On my race day it was extremely hot, the temperature had risen to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit. I’ll admit my race was most challenging because of the heat; many people had to walk, and some couldn’t finish and had to be transported away by ambulance.

“I was fortunate enough to have had plenty of experience to know to keep hydrated and run smartly within my means to not let the heat beat me, let alone the other participants.”

The first World Police and Fire Games were held in San Jose, California, in 1985.

It is a biennial athletic event, open to active and retired law enforcement and fire service personnel throughout the world.

The 2021 World Police and Fire Games will be hosted in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
