Andrew makes a splash at art event

A whale photographer has won a prestigious silver trophy at the Marine Art Prize Awards.

Andrew Stevenson was awarded the Sergeant’s Cup for Marine Art for his aerial photograph of a humpback whale breaching.

The photographer, who has researched humpback whales for 14 years, said he spent nine days with the whale before using a drone to take the picture.

Mr Stevenson added: “I got to know his behaviour, such that I could predict when and where he would breach.

“The photo is only a split second, but it’s the result of countless days on the water observing the whales.

“The unusual perspective captures so much of the essence of these charismatic animals.”

Mr Stevenson’s photograph was taken through a research permit from the Department of Conservation and a small unmanned aircraft licence issued by the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority.

The Sergeant’s Cup was originally given to St Peter’s Church for its 400th anniversary by the Sergeant of the Vestry of the Chapel Royal.

Louis Nanette won the Cedar Award for his model of the Deliverance and Janet Percy won the Bermuda Sloop Award for her model of parrot fish.

All entries to the contest, co-ordinated and financed by The Friends of St Peter’s Church, will be on show at the Bermuda Society of Arts Gallery, City Hall, until October 2.

Prize winners were:

• The Sergeant’s Cup and $250 from The Friends: Andrew Stevenson

• The Cedar Award and $125 from The Friends: Louis Nanette

• The Vera P. Card Bermuda Sloop Award and $75 from The Friends: Janet Percy

• The Colour Lab Award: Jessie Hardy

• The Frameworks Award: Otto Trott

• The Rowe Spurling Art Supply Award: Bryce Pantry

• The Masterworks Literary Award: Kok Wan Lee

• The Masterworks Reigning Award: Charles Gardner

Judges commended certificates to Russell Eddy, Diane Maughan Whittaker and Harold Conyers.
