No injuries in Westgate cell fire

A fire broke out in one of the cells at Westgate prison this morning.The fire service got a call just after 10am, with four trucks and seven firefighters responding from the Port Royal and Hamilton stations.Corrections officers extinguished the blaze, which caused no injuries, but firefighters arrived to find the cell filled with smoke.A fire service spokesman said: “The officer in charge instructed firefighters to set up a smoke extractor to aid in removing the smoke.”The fire was isolated to an electrical outlet in an inmate’s cell, he added.Wayne Caines, said: “All inmates were moved to the recreation field until the BFRS deemed it safe to return to the interior of the facility.”
