A veteran chef has teamed up with a caterer to organise a boxed lunch giveaway for Mother’s Day tomorrow.Fred Ming and Kirk Wilks will hand out free gift baskets of food and drink so that mothers can celebrate at home.Mr Ming and Mr Wilks came up with the idea as a way to give mothers a traditional brunch experience, despite Covid-19 restrictions. He said: “Normally ladies would go to hotels for brunch, but the hotels are closed down.“Basically, we just thought that, seeing that it’s a ladies’ day, we would try to show our appreciation.”Mr Ming added: “We thought we would do something, seeing that the ladies always come first and they do so much — that’s how we got into this world.“Too many people seem to be hurting right now.”Mr Ming is a renowned chef and former Bermuda College lecturer who has written three books on island cuisine.Mr Wilks is the owner and chef at his family business Wilks Catering. The giveaway will be held tomorrow at Lindo’s supermarket in Devonshire and in the car park across from Brock Hall at Bermuda College in Paget. It will start at 1pm and continue until the lunches — about 600 in total — are given away. The lunches will be taken to the car windows of mothers by a masked and gloved volunteer. The pair added that only one basket would be handed out to each car and men drivers would not be permitted.Walk-ins will not be allowed and everyone in the car must be masked. The event was sponsored by wholesalers Butterfield & Vallis, drinks firm Barritt & Sons, BGA Wholesale Distributor, Dunkley’s and Pioneer Dairies, Viking Food, supermarket chain Lindo’s and Bermuda College.
