Armed arrest handled properly, say police

Police conduct in an armed arrest of a man was in line with use of force rules, a senior officer said yesterday.Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes said that, despite the video clip’s “sensational appearance”, the conduct of the officers involved was reviewed in line with regulations and found to be “proportionate to the threat posed based on the information received”.Mr Weekes added: “While the public will not be accustomed to seeing this sort of dynamic policing, this is nothing out of the ordinary.”He added police tactics followed procedures used in Britain and other countries. He said: “Our approach will always be to be firm, but always measured and commensurate to the situation with which we are faced.”Mr Weekes added the operation was carried out in response to information received. He said it was “part of ongoing efforts to disrupt gang activity and antisocial behaviour”.He said the man shown being arrested in the video had since been bailed. The film of the arrest on Monday night, on South Road in Warwick, was circulated on social media.
