The arrest of a woman prison officer at Westgate prison sparked a protest by colleagues outside Hamilton Police Station yesterday.Prison officers walked off the job and gathered outside the Victoria Street police offices in support of their colleague. Timothy Seon, chairman of the Prison Officers Association, said the demonstration followed the arrest of the prison officer on Sunday.Mr Seon added: “The perimeter of Westgate was breached with contraband thrown over the wall. Subsequently, there was an officer arrested and detained for questioning in regards to that matter.“There are concerns because the POA are questioning how this matter has become an external matter.” He said that senior management were “not doing their due diligence, or abrogating from their duties to investigate the matter”. Mr Seon added: “That’s the reason why officers are in today in support of their colleague.”He said the officer had been released on bail, but warned the row was “not resolved at the moment”. Mr Seon added: “We will definitely have to have some talks tomorrow.”Wayne Caines, the national security minister, said last night it would be “premature” to comment as “this is an ongoing investigation”.• Additional reporting by Akil Simmons
