Taxes to be debated in House of Assembly

Soft-drinks debate: proposed sugar tax up for discussion

Legislators are scheduled to debate two tax Bills in Parliament today.

The “sugar tax” on sweetened foods and beverages will go before MPs, along with a Bill to tax Airbnb-style vacation properties at 4.5 per cent on rentals.

The session will also see the swearing-in of the new MPs for Paget East and Warwick North East after the by-elections yesterday.

Ministerial statements will include an update from David Burt, the Premier and Minister of Finance, on the European Union’s list of “non-cooperative jurisdictions” on tax.

Walter Roban. the Deputy Premier, will make a statement on the airport solar plant announced this week.

He will also discuss concerns over wireless “smart meters” installed in homes as part of Belco’s plans to modernise its network.

Wayne Caines, the Minister of National Security, is to speak on cybersecurity as well as hurricane preparedness, while Diallo Rabain, the education minister, will update MPs on training opportunities from the development of the financial technology sector and Steam education — science, technology, engineering, art and maths — in public primary schools.
