The Free Democratic Movement set its sights on the West End yesterday as it positioned six of its 15 General Election candidates in Sandys and Southampton.Marc Bean, a former Progressive Labour Party leader, will fight against Attorney-General Kathy Lynn Simmons and Jeff Sousa, of the OBA, for the Sandys North seat vacated by Michael Scott.The Royal Gazette reported yesterday how some in the PLP had already identified Mr Bean, who has family roots in the West End, as a threat to its traditionally strong grip on the western parishes.Eugene Dean, an environmentalist and businessman, will fight in Sandys South Central against health minister Kim Wilson and Nicky Gurret, of the OBA.Tianna Saltus, a West End activist, will represent the FDM in Sandys North Central, against Speaker of the House of Assembly Dennis Lister Jr and Michael Cann, of the OBA.Christina Storey, an art historian who ran as an independent at the 2017 election, will compete in Sandys South against sitting MP Jamahl Simmons, of the PLP, with no OBA candidate.Chris Gauntlett, the owner of West End business Blue Water Divers, will fight in Southampton West against incumbent Scott Simmons, of the PLP, and Karen Magnum, of the OBA.Kae Thomas Palacio, a lawyer, will run in Southampton West Central against incumbent Ben Smith, of the OBA, and PLP senator Crystal Caesar.Cheryl Packwood, Patrice Minors, LeYoni Junos and Enda Matthie were among the well-known new faces rolled out by the FDM yesterday.Ms Packwood, the former director of the Government’s Washington office and former CEO of Business Bermuda, has appeared more recently as a political observer.She will represent the FDM in Hamilton South, a seat won by Sylvan Richards, of the OBA, in 2017. Mr Richards has been replaced by Robin Tucker as the OBA candidate, while Anthony Richardson will run for the PLP.Ms Minors, who became one of the key figures of the 2007 election when she defeated Opposition leader Michael Dunkley in Smith’s North, will return to fight against present Opposition leader Craig Cannonier in Devonshire South Central, as well as Lindsay Simmons, of the PLP, and independent Marilyn Steede.Ms Junos, an activist and historian, will fight in Pembroke West against Jache Adams, of the PLP, and Marcus Jones, of the OBA. Jeanne Atherden, who won the seat for the OBA in 2017, stood down.Enda Matthie, who staged a hunger strike on the grounds of Cabinet in protest at OBA policies in 2016, will stand in Pembroke West Central against David Burt, the Premier, and Nick Kempe, of the OBA.Founding members Desmond Crockwell and Gavin Smith will represent the FDM in Hamilton East and Pembroke South East respectively.Mr Crockwell, an anti-violence campaigner, will be up against incumbent Derrick Burgess, of the PLP, and the OBA’s Elizabeth Harvey, a former journalist and wife of OBA consultant Jeremy Deacon.Mr Smith, executive director of the Chewstick Foundation in Hamilton, will fight in Pembroke South East against finance minister Curtis Dickinson, who switched constituencies after incumbent Rolfe Commissiong stepped down. The OBA will not challenge in Pembroke South East.Entrepreneur Dwain Smith will fight in St George’s West against Kim Swan, the PLP incumbent, and Thomas Harvey, of the OBA.Leighsa Darrell-Augustus will challenge in Devonshire North Central against education minister Diallo Rabain and Charlie Swan, of the OBA.Collingwood Robinson will compete in Warwick North Central against public works minister Lieutenant-Colonel David Burch and Doug DeCouto, of the OBA.
