Smyth rejoins XL Catlin from Aspen

Donnacha Smyth is returning to XL Catlin after a two-year stint with Aspen Insurance.

XL Catlin insurance operations has appointed Mr Smyth as president, Global Excess Casualty Insurance. He will take up the position in September.

He worked for XL Catlin between 2006 and 2016 as chief excess casualty officer, before joining Aspen where he led the International Excess Casualty group.

In his new role at XL Catlin, Mr Smyth will lead all global excess casualty teams, including North America, Dublin and Bermuda. He will be based in Dublin.

Joe Tocco, XL Catlin’s chief executive, North America Insurance, said: “Donnacha’s broad experience in this space, as well as his in-depth knowledge of our organisation will be a fantastic asset to the ongoing growth of our business and the strengthening of our existing relationships with clients and brokers. We are delighted to welcome him back to XL Catlin.”

In another announced appointment, Carla Greaves is to become chief underwriting officer, Global Excess Casualty.

Ms Greaves, who is based in Bermuda, currently leads excess casualty underwriting for Bermuda. Mr Tocco said: “I am excited to see Carla step into this new leadership role; she is known in the market for her expert underwriting skills and for helping solve very complex risk management challenges for our clients and brokers.”
