Willis Towers Watson are inviting you to grab your sneakers and your walking friends to take part in the 16th annual Bermuda Railway Trek on October 17.The walk will start at Somerset Bridge and finish at the Swizzle Inn, Hamilton Parish. The trek raises money for students studying risk management or actuarial science at Georgia State University in Atlanta, Georgia. The Bermuda Scholarship Fund grants scholarships for students studying in the Risk Management & Insurance Department. The programme offers majors in actuarial science, insurance and quantitative risk management.Since the fund began awarding scholarships in 2009, 19 students have completed their studies and are working in the risk management industries. More than $220,000 has been granted to students. Some of the graduates have been hired by the Bermuda Monetary Authority, EY, HSBC, Ariel, Validus, OCI Ltd, Hamilton Re, Hiscox, PwC, and KPMG. “There are 18 students from Bermuda currently enrolled at GSU,” said Zya Fraser, GSU student and the president of the Bermuda Delegate Association, the Bermudian student group. “Most are in the business school and there are a few in health sciences and in the arts. We get together to have fun and share information about how to negotiate the big university and city.” Many of the scholarship students supported by the trek are also in the 2+2 programme, an articulation agreement between Bermuda College and GSU. The agreement calls for GSU to accept credits from Bermuda College and grants in-state tuition to students enrolled in the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University. This programme saves students approximately $19,000 per year in tuition and fees. Combining the 2+2 and the Bermuda Scholarship Fund, students can realise about $24,000 in tuition assistance per year. Applications are accepted to the 2+2 programme in the spring with a May 30 deadline. Among this year’s sponsors are Willis Towers Watson, Paragon, Argo, Chubb, AWAC, and McGriff, Siebels and Williams. GSU works with Bermuda College, Bermuda College Fair, BFIS, ABIC and Bermuda Scholarships to connect students with the opportunities at GSU. • If you are interested in walking or would like to make a pledge, e-mail Deb.desilva@willistowerswatson.com or visit https://tinyurl.com/y6pkhhqm to access the sponsorship and participation forms.
