Tyler Smith produced a strong performance on Sunday to finish fifth in the junior male category at the British Under-20s Triathlon Festival at Mallory Park in Leicestershire, England.

Smith, a student at the University of Leeds, was competing with 56 others juniors as he clocked a time of 59min 26sec, finishing just 25 seconds off a podium final.

The event contained the top British juniors vying for a place on the Britain team at the Junior World Championships in Rotterdam on September 16.

Smith was first out of the water and was in the lead pack of eight riders for the 20km bike. He then held on to produce a strong run over the 5km course, clocking 16:09 as he just missed out on a top-three finish.

The race was won by Ben Dijkstra, of Britain, who finished in a time of 57:59 after his blistering 14:43 time on the run separated him from the rest of the leading athletes.

Smith said his training is right where he wants it to be in preparation for the World Championships which take place on Saturday, September 16.
