Chayce Smith and Ashley Berry won the male and female open category during the first race of the Bermuda National Athletics Association Cross Country series on Saturday at Chaplin Bay.

Smith took the honours when he beat Sean Trott by more than five minutes after completing the 4.5-mile course in 30min 56.2sec, with Trott finishing in 36.21.

Berry was the lone open female competitor and ran the three-mile course in 22:40.9, finishing almost four minutes ahead of under-20 competitor Macy Aicardi in 26.31.4.

In the under-17s, Quincy Kuzyk won the boys’ three-mile race by 16 seconds ahead of Johndell Cumberbatch. Kuzyk clocked 22:20.9 secs while Cumberbatch crossed the line in 22.36.8, while Ryan Outerbridge was 14 seconds behind in third.

In the girls’ under-17, Kayla Raymond placed first in 31.18.9, almost four minutes ahead of Kyaida Lanthier in 35.12.6, while Brianna Mawer was close behind in third place in 35.28.3. Mikaela Outerbridge was fourth in 36.31.1.

In the under-14s, Saj Carey won the boys’ two-mile race in 09.07.5 while Tommy Marshall was second in 13.43.3 and Jake Brislane third in 14.39.8.

Zoe Hasselkuss won the under-14 girls’ race by 20 seconds ahead of Jezhari Talbot, clocking 17.04.4, while Talbot crossed in 17.24.2. Liana Medeiros was third in 18.27.4.

Other junior age group winners were Jaida Grant and Katherine Bean-Rosario in the girls’ under-10 and under-12 races, while Masaki Kitade won the boys’ under-10 and Jaelyn Grant the under-12s.

Those races were run over a one-mile course, with Bean-Rosario clocking 7.45 and Jaida Grant 7.54.5, while Jaelyn Grant had a time of 7.17.1 and Kitade 7.41.2.

The second race of the series will be held on October 7 at Fort Scaur.
