Tyler Butterfield finished joint 44th in the Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii, yesterday.

Patrick Lange, of Germany, smashed the full course record by two minutes to win in a time of 8hr 1min 40sec after an incredible run, in which he moved up from eleventh on the second transition for overall victory.

Lange record 48:45 in the 2.4-mile swim, 4:28:53 in the 112-mile bike and 2:39:59 in the 26.2-mile run. Craig Alexander, of Australia, held the previous course record of 8:03:56.

Fellow Australian Josh Amberger led out of the water, with an impressive time of 47:09, leading Harry Wiltshire, of Britain, and two-times defending champion Jan Frodeno, of Germany, by just over one minute.

It was a disappointing swim from Frodeno, and he was soon wheeled in by Lionel Sanders, of Canada, Sebastian Kienle, of Germany and Australian Cameron Wurf on the bike.

The trio would form the lead group, with Wurf leading after the second transition, having set a bike course record of 4:12:54. Sanders was second, 1:13 behind, with Kienle 1:46 adrift. Frodeno was 2:45 behind with Lange in eleventh place.

Sanders moved in front on the run with Frodeno clearly struggling, but Lange took the race by storm with his incredible final leg. The Canadian ended up second, in a time of 8:04:07. with David McNamee, of Britain, third in 8:07:11. Kienle finished fourth in 8:09:59.

Butterfield finished the swim in 28th, with a time of 48:54 before recording 4:35:09 on the bike.
