Tyler Butterfield produced another solid display to earn a spot on the podium at the Ironman 70.3 Cozumel in Mexico yesterday.

The Bermudian professional triathlete was second across the line in an overall time of 3hr 49min 25sec to take the silver medal on the same day compatriot and multiple ITU women’s world champion Flora Duffy celebrated her 31st birthday.

Butterfield led the field out of the water after a completing the 1.2-mile swim in 22:16, more than a minute ahead of eventual winner Michael Weiss, of Austria.

However, Weiss, a multiple-time Ironman winner this year, first reeled in and then passed Butterfield during the 56-mile bike to open close to a seven-minute gap.

Butterfield, a two-times Olympian, eventually completed the bike ride in fifth in a time of 2:07:47.

He did well to work his way back up the field and complete the 13.1-mile run in 1:16:11.

But it was not enough to reel in Weiss, who broke the tape to take the win in a combined 3:47:14.

Alan Carrillo Avila, of Mexico, finished third with an overall time of 3:52:33 to round off the professional men’s podium.

Ellie Salthouse, of Australia, claimed the women’s title in 4:15:12.

Svenja Thoes, of Germany, crossed the line a little more than a minute later in 4:18:44 for second place, with Canadian Angela Naeth third in 4:25:12.

Meanwhile, Butterfield’s impressive display would have boosted his confidence ahead of the Ironman Triathlon World Championships to be held in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on October 13.

He has already cracked the elusive top ten in Kona on two occasions, his solid seventh-place display in 2013 equalling father Jim Butterfield’s best showing at the event in 1981.
