Tyler Butterfield secured his spot at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, by winning the Ironman Cozumel in spectacular fashion in Mexico yesterday.Fresh from his victory at the Ironman Cozumel 70.3 just a few weeks ago, Butterfield produced arguably the best performance of his triathlon career to clock an impressive overall time of 7hrs 44mins 01sec to become one of just a handful of triathletes to break the 7:45 barrier for the 4-kilometre swim, 180km bike and 42km run.Butterfield started solidly emerging from the water in 42:10 just three minutes off the lead in fifteenth place but well in touch with his main rivals, including Tim O’Donnell who finished second at the Ironman World Championships in October.After a strong 4:19:14 bike, Butterfield left the second transition still some 8:54 behind race leader, Michael Weiss, of Austria.It recent races, including Ironman Florida, Butterfield has shown excellent running form and it soon became evident that he was going to produce something special for the 42km as he started to reel in his rivals.By mile 17, he had incredibly overtaken Weiss and gradually distanced himself from the Austrian recording a time of 2:38:29 for the marathon to clinch a memorable victory.Few triathletes have gone below the 2:40 mark for the marathon in an Ironman.Weiss was forced to settle for second place, with Mario De Elias, of Argentina, completing the podium.Butterfield has had some impressive Ironman 70.3 results in recent years but has largely failed to reproduce the form that saw him finish fifth in the Ironman World Championships in 2015.
