Roger Beach, the skipper of Royal Hamilton Amateur Dinghy Club’s fitted dinghy Elizabeth II, has hailed his team-mates after another dominant display of sailing at Granaway Deep at the weekend.

Flying their No 3 rig in Sunday’s eight to 12-knot southerly breezes, Elizabeth II swept all three races to sail off into the sunset with the BAA Cup, WH Bennett Memorial Trophy and Spithead Trophy.

Beach and his team-mates have won all six races sailed so far this season and remain firmly on course to defend their Coronation Cup title, awarded to the winner of the season series.

“We have had a nice start to the season with two good days out there,” Beach said. “It’s been a mix of good communication, strong tactical decisions and just sailing the boat fast when we can.”

Jason Saints, the helmsman, Katrina Williams, the tactician, Lance Fraser, mainsheet, Jordan Saints, jib and spinnaker, and Patrick Mahon, midboat, make up the remainder of Elizabeth II’s crew.

“We’ve got a fair bit of experience on our crew for a relatively young bunch and very talented sailors on-board myself excluded,” Beach said. “Everyone is very good and we’re always trying to just watch out for what may come next.

“We have sailed together for a while and communication is really key and we have improved on that this season. There’s still some room for improvement and I think the other boats are starting to improve as well, and so we are going to have to be on our game next time. Touch wood, it’s nice we haven’t had any breakages with the boat yet, and I think that can go down to preparation in the offseason.”

Sunday’s regatta was hosted by the RHADC.

Sharing the podium with Elizabeth II in all three races were the St George’s Dinghy and Sports Club’s fitted dinghy Victory IV and the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club’s Contest III.

Victory IV took second in all three races and Contest III third. Sandys Boat Club’s Challenger II retired from the first race after experiencing problems with their rigging and did not make it to the start for the second and third races. The next race day is at Granaway Deep on July 16.
