Paul Goodison will be keen to extend his world dominance at next week’s Bacardi World Moth Championship in the Great Sound.

The British sailor is gunning for a third straight world title in the high-performance foiling dinghy and is the red-hot favourite going into the championship, scheduled to be held from March 26 to April 1.

Victory would also earn Goodison a fourth world title overall as he is a past Laser world champion who also won the gold medal in the single -handed dinghy at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

The two-times defending champion was a member of the Artemis Racing syndicate that competed at last year’s 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda.

He spent countless hours practising with his team-mates in the Great Sound in the lead up to the event and now intends to use his vast knowledge of the local conditions to his advantage.

However, he is not the only sailor familiar with the local conditions as Artemis team-mates Iain Jensen and Francesco Bruni and Oracle Team USA pair Tom Slingsby and Rome Kirby are also among those vying for his title.

Among the local hopefuls are James Doughty, the Bermuda Moth Class Association president, and Joshua Greenslade.

“I am definitely feeling more confident than in the previous regattas because I have improved a lot,” Doughty said.

“I am excited to have such high-quality athletes here and a few of the America’s Cup boys have come back for this regatta.”

The championship, which also features a Masters division as well as a sole entry in the women’s and youth divisions, is being hosted for the first time by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club in conjunction with the International Moth Class Association.

“The Moth Class is very excited about hosting the Worlds in Bermuda, a perfect foiling location,” Luca Rizzotti, president of the Moth Class Association, said. “For many of the class members involved with the America’s Cup this will be a welcome return to the warm waters of Bermuda. For others it offers the chance to race in one of the world’s renowned sailing destinations.”

The Bacardi World Moth Championships is to be preceded by the Bermuda Moth National Championship, scheduled for tomorrow and Saturday.
