The Star Sailors League, featuring the world’s elite sailors, has been linked with a potential stopover in Bermuda this year.

It is understood that plans are in the works that could see the island host one of the regattas on the international circuit.

Details remain sketchy, however, it has been suggested that the regatta will held in December and run out of Dockyard’s South Basin, with racing in the former Olympic class Star keelboat to be held in the Great Sound.

The Star Sailors League was launched in 2013 by a group of professional and amateur sailors to support sailing athletes and is modelled on the principles of tennis’s ATP Tour, with an annual calendar made up of four grand slam events and the finals based on a “masters” tournament. At the end of the circuit the champion of champions will be crowned.

As with tennis, the circuit offers prize money and ranking points.

Starting in 2020, the circuit will comprise of as many as 220 regattas and five major events each year: four open grand slams and one finals.

The annual finals, bringing together the top ten ranked teams on the Star Sailing League leaderboard and Champions from other classes, will be the flagship competition that will showcase the circuit and offer its biggest purse.

World Sailing, the global governing body for sailing, announced last November that the Star Sailors League has been recognised with Special Event status.

The Star Sailors League joins the America’s Cup, World Match Racing Tour, Volvo Ocean Race, Extreme Sailing Series, PWA World Tour and the Global Kitesports Association’s freestyle world tours, as World Sailing’s seventh Special Event. Special Event status ensures the world governing body formally recognises and sanctions the event.

World Sailing will also support the event with promotional and marketing activities as well as providing International Race Officials. As part of the agreement, the event will also be held under World Sailing’s Racing Rules of Sailing and Regulations with organisers of the Star Sailors League allowed to amend certain rules that do not impede the event.

The Star Sailors League was spawned from a desire to offer sailing champions a “simple, well-priced and efficient platform” from which to showcase their talents to a global audience.

Another aim of the circuit is to be a part of tradition while making the sport more attractive to the public as well as celebrating stars past and present.
