Campbell Patton secured a spot for Bermuda at the next ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships competing in Italy late last month.

The son of multiple national Etchells champion Tim Patton finished 39th in a 126-strong Laser Radial fleet at the Laser Youth Easter Meeting held on Lake Garda from March 28 to 31.

This year’s ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships will take place from July 14-22 in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Patton, who had a best showing of sixth at the regatta, led a small contingent of Royal Bermuda Yacht Club youth sailors in Italy.

Also flying the island’s flag were Adriana Penruddocke and siblings Tre and Taj Maxwell.

Penruddocke placed 75th, Taj 105th and Tre 111th.

The race committee was only able to complete three races at last month’s Laser Youth Easter Meeting regatta because of lack of wind.

Putting the young sailors through their paces in Italy was Shaun Priestly, the former RBYC sailing coach, in his role at the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre located on the shores of Lake Garda.

The new non-profit facility is owned and run by the Andrew Simpson Foundation and is the charity’s first sailing and watersports centre outside of the United Kingdom.

Tre, 18, is presently doing a foiling instructors course and a coaching stint at the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre in Lake Garda.

The Andrew Simpson Foundation was set up in memory of the late British sailor who lost his life in a training exercise with Swedish challenger Artemis Racing in the build up to the 34th America’s Cup in San Francisco.

Simpson won Olympic gold and silver medals competing in the Star class with fellow Artemis Racing team-mate Iain Percy and is a past visitor of Bermuda.

Meanwhile, Patton is thriving at this week’s Laser Radial Youth European Championships on Lake Balaton, Hungary.

He is presently sixth, six points off the final spot on the podium, after five races and a drop with three top five finishes and a best showing of second to date.

Accompanying Patton in Hungary is RBYC team-mate Taj who is presently 131st in the 154-strong racing fleet with a best showing so far of 38th.

The regatta concludes tomorrow.
