Patton impresses at World Championships

Impressive showing: Campbell Patton

Campbell Patton produced his second best showing at the Youth Sailing World Championships that concluded in Gdynia, Poland, yesterday.

The Bermudian placed 22nd among a 57-strong Laser Radial fleet with a best finish of fifth during the nine races contested in variable conditions.

Patton crossed the line in 39th in the only race contested yesterday.

The 18-year-old achieved his best showing of twelfth at the Championship in Corpus Christi, Texas, last year.

He qualified for the championships after finishing fourth at the Laser Youth Easter Meeting regatta on Lake Garda, Italy, in April.

This was Patton’s third appearance at the Championship having made his debut in 2016 when he placed 30th.

Yigit Yalcin Citak, of Turkey, secured the Laser Radial title in Poland this year after jumping two places in the standings from third to first on the final day of the event.

The Championships was first held in Sweden in 1971 and is regarded as the pinnacle for young sailors who aspire to compete at the Olympics or at other prestigious events such as the America’s Cup.

Bermuda hosted the championship in 1995.
