Rockal Evans hopes to fulfil a childhood dream when he competes at the upcoming Hempel Sailing World Cup Miami.The Bermuda sailor is competing in the Finn class for the sole qualifying spot from the North American region for the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer.“My goal is to qualify in Miami at the World Sailing event for Tokyo 2020 Olympics,” Evans said. “Canada and the United States have already qualified for the Olympics in the North American region, leaving Cuba and Mexico as my main competition.”Evans has added incentive to realise his Olympic ambition.“My grandfather was my role model, having represented Bermuda in the Finn class at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal,” he said.“I grew up wanting to be just like him; having the same drive, passion and commitment for a sport we both love.“For the last ten years, I have been working towards my dream of representing Bermuda at an Olympic Games and each year I have been building on turning this dream into a reality, with Tokyo 2020 now in reach.”Evans said the past few years have been about “commitment” and “dedication”.He added: “I moved to Sydney in 2017 to take the opportunity to train with elite Australian and international sailors and preparations are right on track.“I have been working with fitness and dietitian experts to ensure my strength, fitness and endurance are at an optimal level.“I have been working on the right sail and mast combinations and have shipped my own boat to Miami for the event to give me the best possible chance, rather than reliance on a charter boat.”Evans’s Olympic campaign has received a timely and vital financial boost.“Aspen Bermuda Limited have recently provided me with financial support and, in conjunction with a funding grant recently received from the Bermuda Olympic Association, this has allowed me to secure a specialist coach for a couple of training session blocks in the three months leading up to the qualifying event,” he said.“I’ve made a huge amount of progress in just a short space of time that I’ve been working with the coach. There is only so much you can do on your own.“Many of my competitors have full-time coaches and access to a support network, including nutrition, physiology, boat maintenance and development and have done for some time.”The Hempel Sailing World Cup Miami will take place from January 19 to 25.
