Ebbin continues surge up the standings

Christian Ebbin continued his impressive fightback during the penultimate day of the Semana de Mar del Plata Regatta in Argentina yesterday.The national Optimist boys champion produced a 6-2-3 record in the three races contested in the gold fleet to surge five places in the standings from tenth to fifth.Ebbin has made up considerable ground lost after suffering an equipment breakdown on the opening day of racing which left him in 106th.He is among a trio of local sailors having qualified for the gold fleet in Argentina which includes Royal Bermuda Yacht Club Academy team-mates Magnus Ringsted and Nicole Stovell, the national Optimist girls’ champion.Ringsted posted a 10-12-9 record which left him in 16th among the 65-strong entries in the gold fleet.Stovell, who was unable to compete because of a stomach illness, sits in 64th.Rachael Betschart, the remaining member of the local contingent, leads the 63-strong silver fleet after producing an impressive 1-7-8 record on the day.“The conditions were ideal for our sailors and I was pleased with their results,” Pablo Weber, the team’s coach, said.“Moving forward, I expect the sailors to continue improving and finish strong.”The local sailors all competed at the championships last year, where Ebbin, Ringsted and Betschart qualified for the gold fleet and Stovell for the silver fleet.Ebbin was the island’s top performer, finishing fourth in the 78-strong gold fleet, while Ringsted and Betschart also held their own finishing 24th and 39th respectively. Stovell finished eighteenth in the silver fleet and 96th overall. Ebbin, Ringsted and Betschart are all making their third appearance and Stovell her second.Griggs Diemar, of the United States, holds a one-point advantage over compatriot and top female Samara Walshe at the top of the overall standings.The Semana de Mar del Plata Regatta is being organised by the Club Nautico Mar del Plata in conjunction with the Yacht Club Argentino and concludes today. Bermuda sailor Chase Cooper won the regatta in 2013.
