Nathan Trott, the West Ham Under-23 goalkeeper, produced a string of saves but was unable to prevent his team from a 2-0 home defeat against unbeaten Liverpool in the Premier League 2 at the Chigwell Construction Stadium yesterday.

Harry Wilson’s first-half double condemned West Ham to their third straight defeat in what was Trott’s first appearance for the London club since returning from international duty with the England Under-20 squad.

Liverpool took the game to the home side right from the kick off with Ovie Ejaria forcing Trott into a save with just 11 seconds on the clock.

However, Liverpool made the breakthrough when Wilson cut in on his left foot and rifled a shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

The Welshman struck again nine minutes later with a cool finish after his run went unchecked by the West Ham defence. West Ham squandered an opportunity to pull one back when striker Toni Martinez’s penalty was saved by Kamil Grabara, the Liverpool goalkeeper.

Trott continued to frustrate Liverpool, making another excellent save before the half to deny Matty Virtue from ten yards after he had been played through.

Trott was also kept busy in the second half as he denied Wilson a hat-trick on two occasions and then made a sprawling save to claw away substitute Yan Dhanda’s effort in stoppage time.

West Ham’s Under-23 side have not won since recording a 5-2 home victory over Swansea on August 27 in what was Trott’s final appearance before the international break.

Trott kept a clean sheet to cap a memorable debut for England Under-20 in their 3-0 win over Holland.

He was part of the England Under-19 squad that won the European Championship in Georgia last summer.
