It has been a memorable week for Brookhaven College sophomore Deshae Darrell.

The Bermuda Under-20 forward grabbed the headlines after scoring both of the Lady Bears goals in a 2-1 victory away to division rivals Richland College on Tuesday.

That clinical display of marksmanship arrived on the same day Darrell had National Junior College Athletic Association Region 5 Division III Player of the Week honours bestowed upon her for the week of September 10-16.

Naturally, the player was over the moon to have received the award for the first time.

“I was excited that I received the player of the week award,” Darrell told The Royal Gazette. “It is an honour to receive this award because it is something that many people don’t get and being an international student and first time receiving this award for Brookhaven College is an honour.”

Darrell received the award for an outstanding display in her team’s 3-2 overtime win at home to No 6 ranked Eastfield College, scoring the game’s opening goal and assisting in the winner from a set piece.

“I am enjoying playing for this school, even though I am out here dying in this heat,” Darrell, who three goals and one assist under her belt so far this season, said. “The team is great and the coach is very helpful and wants to see everyone go far.”

As for her memorable brace against Richland, Darrell said: “The first goal was a tough battle and was on a weird angle but I managed to hit the back of the net.

“The second goal was again on an angle but I managed to run onto a through ball from one of my team-mates to the far right of goal and one time hit into the back of the net.”

Darrell is one of two Bermudians on the Lady Bears roster, the other being Bermuda Under-20 team-mate Micah Pond.

“It is cool to have someone that knows how I play and from the same place as me because she knows what my strengths and weaknesses are,” Darrell said.

Darrell and Pond were among Bermuda’s standout performers during July’s Concacaf Caribbean Women’s Under-20 qualifiers at the National Stadium.

Darrell scored in both of Bermuda’s matches against Curacao and Jamaica while Pond, who plays as a midfielder for Brookhaven College, produced an excellent display in goal against the Reggae Girlz.
