The Bermuda women’s football team will fly out to Guyana on Monday, aiming to secure the top spot and qualification to the final round of the Concacaf Women’s Championship.

Half of the 20-member team, coached by Naquita Robinson and Vance Brown, are in school abroad, but most are back already and will fly out with the team with two or three others meeting the team en route to Guyana where they play their first match in group E against hosts Guyana next Wednesday at the 3,000-seater Synthetic Track and Field Facility in Leonora.

The team also contains two members of the Under-17 team, Trinae Edwards and Jadae Steede-Hill, with Eva Frazzoni, last year’s under-20 captain, is one of ten players who are abroad in school, along with Taznae Fubler, Micah Pond, Symira Lowe Darrell, Ember Butterfield, Deshae Darrell, Victoria Davis, Keunna Dill, K’Shaela Burch Waldron and Marley Christian.

Bermuda’s other two matches in the round robin tournament will be on May 25 and 27 when they meet Barbados and Surinam. Group winners advance to the Caribbean final round, which is scheduled for August 25 to September 2.

“We are confident going into this tournament with the group we have been placed in,” Robinson, the head coach, said. “Only the winners advance so it’s important that we start the tournament strong.

“I think Guyana will be a strong opponent and we are up against them first. Barbados have improved a great deal so they won’t be the whipping girls as they have been in the past. Surinam will be a surprise for us as we’ve never played them at any level.

“Coach Vance and I have watched clips of them from the April tournament and they look a formidable opponent. This round will provide competitive competition but we are sure we will progress.”

Bermuda will be without striker Aaliyah Nolan and left-back Leah Smith because of injuries.

“Hopefully once we advance they will be available for selection,” Robinson said.
