Bermuda Under-15 girls looking to top the group

Perfect record: the Bermuda Under-15 side have won both of their matches in Bradenton, Florida

The Bermuda Under-15 girls team need only a draw against Curaçao today to win group D and advance to tomorrow’s semi-final at the Concacaf Under-15 Championship in Bradenton, Florida.

Jahni Simmons’s left-footed strike in the final minute sealed a 1-0 win over Barbados on Tuesday to remain top of their group with a pair of wins, two points ahead of Curaçao.

Vance Brown, the Bermuda coach, whose side beat Antigua and Barbuda in their opener on Monday, expected it to be a close match against Barbados.

“We knew going into this match that it was going to be difficult so we had to battle to get a result,” Brown said. “Danni Watson and Zemira Webb definitely were solid at the back and Emily Cabral and Jahni Simmons played well.”

It was Cabral’s run down the left flank that created the opening for 12-year-old Simmons to control the ball before driving a shot past the Barbados goalkeeper.

“We started off slow due to the heat which was a major factor,” Brown said. “I thought in the first half we gave the ball away easily and could have taken an extra touch to settle down quicker.

“At the half-time break we changed a few things and made a couple of substitutions and they changed the game for us. I also told them we might only get one chance to score so take it when it comes.

“We have an off day tomorrow [yesterday] and will have to be ready for Curaçao.”

The other three groups in Division Two will also pit the top two teams against each other, all with six points from two matches.

In group E, Cayman Island s and Saint Lucia meet today, both looking for their third win to seal the group. The same applies in groups F and G where St Kitts and Nevis play Martinique and Anguilla face Grenada.
