Reggie Lambe’s Cambridge United team slipped into the bottom two in Sky Bet League Two last night when they were beaten 3-1 at home by Forest Green Rovers.

As they did on Saturday with Lambe’s two first-half goals, Cambridge lost the lead given to them midway through the first half when Jevani Brown broke the deadlock. Forest Green replied with goals in the 34th and 55th minutes before Cambridge had Jake Carroll sent off in the 76th minute.

Forest Green capitalised on the advantage by adding a third goal in the 88th minute as Cambridge slipped into the relegation places after Notts County and Grimsby Town both won.

Lambe, who joined Cambridge this season from Carlisle United, is confident that his team can turn their flagging fortunes around and become a reckoning force in the division. Lambe and his team-mates have not enjoyed the best of times lately having lost five of their past six outings, going winless since edging Stevenage 1-0 away from home on September 1.

Lambe, the Bermuda captain, says recent results have done his team’s performances on the pitch no justice.

“I feel at the moment it’s just been a bad patch for us and the results aren’t a fair reflection of our performances,” he told The Royal Gazette this week.

“Once we can turn our performances into wins and cut out errors, teams will not want to play us because we are a good side.”

Forest Green are now unbeaten in their opening 11 league games of the season while Cambridge are winless in five.

“It’ll be a tough game because they’re undefeated all season,” Lambe said beforehand. “But this is the game that we want to use to turn our season around and get back on track.”

Gary Deegan, the Cambridge captain, was available having been ruled out of his team’s 4-2 defeat away to Newport County on Saturday through suspension after accumulating five bookings.

Lambe scored his second and third goals of the season in that match, giving the visiting side an early 2-0 advantage at Rodney Parade before Newport scored four unanswered goals to continue a strong start to the season.

The 27-year-old forward will lead Bermuda in their second Concacaf Nations League qualifying match against Sint Maarten at the National Stadium in nine days’ time.

For the moment, though, his focus remains a positive end to a hectic three-game schedule inside seven days for his club side before returning home for international duty.

“It’s hard to look forward to the Nations League with three games prior to the match against Sint Maarten,” said Lambe, who scored four goals for Bermuda in a 7-0 win against the French-Caribbean outfit in a Caribbean Cup qualifying match a decade ago. “My focus before then will be to get a couple of wins before turning my focus on Sint Maarten.”

Bermuda are also at home against El Salvador on November 16 before finishing their qualifying campaign with an away tie against Dominican Republic on March 24.

Those games will determine the three divisions for the Nations League, which starts in September 2019, as well as the ten remaining Gold Cup spots.

• Nahki Wells, who could also return for the Bermuda match next week, went off five minutes after a bad tackle from Josh Sims in the 70th minute of last night’s match against Reading. Sims was booked for the tackle as Queens Park Rangers held on for five minutes of added time to win the match 1-0 on a 64th-minute goal from Tomi Leishner after a corner.

Wells, still looking for his first goal since joining the West London club on a season-long loan, was replaced by Tomar Hemed, another loan player, in the 75th minute. The win ended a run of successive losses to Swansea City and Norwich City, and lifts QPR up to seventeenth in the Championship. They are home to Derby County on Saturday.
