Danté Leverock is aiming to have a positive year after making his first appearance on the training ground at new club Sligo Rovers yesterday.

The Bermuda defender has made a seamless transition since joining the top-flight Irish club last month from Estonian outfit Narva Trans after agreeing to terms of a one-year deal.

“It’s my first day back to work and so far it is going well,” Leverock told The Royal Gazette.

“I’m fitting in and it is just so good to be back to work.

“There is a very professional attention to detail from the coaches and I’m very excited to work hard and have a good year with the team.

“My team-mates are a great bunch of boys and welcomed me in, so that’s always a good feeling.

“The people are friendly, so that has really helped me.”

Leverock made 34 appearances and scored eight goals for Narva Trans last season and is the second Bermudian behind goalkeeper Freddy Hall, who spent three years at Limerick, to play in the Irish top flight.

The 26-year-old said playing for SSE Airtricity League Premier Division outfit Sligo was an opportunity he could not turn down.

“When I spoke to Liam Buckley [the manager], I really couldn’t pass up the chance to come and play for him and this club,” Leverock added.

“He told me of how he wants Rovers to improve and I think he can help me grow as a player. He explained there will be tough competition but that’s something I thrive on and it makes us all better players.”

Buckley has high expectations for Leverock, who has captained Bermuda in their previous two outings in the Concacaf Nations League qualifiers.

“He’s a good, big centre half and is hungry to make as good a career as he can for himself, and this is another step forward for him,” he said.

“He’s got a good background of experience in English non-League and he’s coming with the knowledge of playing abroad and international level.”

Leverock and his team-mates are away to Dundalk at Oriel Park in their league opener next month.
