Goal of the week: Zeiko Lewis

Zeiko Lewis says he is honoured to have won the United Soccer League Championship goal of the week competition.

The Bermuda winger netted Charleston Battery’s second goal in a 2-0 home win over Charlotte Independence at the MUSC Health Stadium last weekend.

Lewis won 56 per cent of the votes in the USL fans’ choice goal of the week, beating Ryan Sierakowski, of Portland Timbers, Bradford Jamieson IV, of San Antonio FC, Joao Plate, of Real Monarchs SLC and Jerome Ngom Mbekeli, of Swope Park Rangers. A total of 1405 people voted.

The 24-year-old forward controlled a throw in from team-mate O’Brian Woodbine before curling a left-footed shot into the top left corner from 16-yards.

“It’s an honour, of course, but it’s mostly great to feel the support behind me,” Lewis said. “My friends and family were all sending me the voting polls but to see the entire island starting to post it on social media and letting me know that they were giving me their support was an amazing feeling.”

Lewis’s 71st-minute strike was his second of the season after opening his account in a 2-1 home win over Hartford Athletic last month.

Swede Ian Svantesson opened the scoring in the 21st minute with his third goal in four matches.

Lewis and Svantesson have formed a potent partnership and have been involved in five of their team’s six goals this season.
