Gold Cup hopefuls to miss All-Star game

Goal hungry: Donavan Thompson, of X-Roads, will take part in the All-Star Cup this weekend

Two All-Star matches will take place on Saturday at Goose Gosling Field, though hopes of involving national team players have been dashed because of Bermuda’s upcoming Gold Cup matches.

Alex Belvedere, of Triangle Football Clothing, is organising the All-Star Cup, which will involve a First Division Select against a Corona League Select at 7pm, as well as a Premier Division East v West Select match at 9pm.

Many of the national team players have opted out so not to pick up injuries ahead of the Gold Cup matches which will take place in June.

Donavan Thompson, of X-Roads, and Dandy Town’s Angelo Simmons, the season’s top-two goalscorers, have confirmed they will play as have Shaquille Trott and Rakeem DeShields, of PHC Zebras, Trevin Ming, of Somerset Trojans, BAA’s Keishen Bean, Dashun Cooper, of X-Roads, Tomiko Goater and Shakir Smith, of Robin Hood, Damon Ming, of Dandy Town and Boulevard’s Ian Coke.

“The match has been sanctioned by the Corona League as well as the BFA, which is looking to put the event in their calendar,” Belvedere, the Robin Hood vice-president, said.

“I want to make it an annual event and build on it and maybe include some youth teams as well. I’m really just trying to bring the communities and families back out to football.”

Pitt and Company have come on board as a main sponsor and Belvedere is optimistic sponsorship will increase as the event grows.

The plan was to hold the matches after the FA Cup final, but Bermuda’s upcoming participation in the Gold Cup means some of the island’s top players have opted out.

“It will be a celebration of the whole season, get all the stars out and just enjoy ourselves,” Belvedere added.

“I don’t mind that the Bermuda squad guys got pulled. I’d rather all those guys focus on becoming fully fit and representing our island to their fullest potential. I wish them nothing but the best this summer as we debut in the Gold Cup.”

The First Division Select team will contain the top scorers Jarazinho Bassett, of Southampton Rangers, and Leo Burgess and Tahj Wade, of Somerset Eagles, the two promoted sides. Also included are Rangers pair Ezekiel Stoneham and Quadir Maynard along with Hamilton Parish pair Shayne Hollis and Chris Caisey.

Former BFA league players, Jason Simons, Chris Fosker and Ralph Bean Jr are among those selected for the Corona team.

n A goal midway through the first half by Mackie Crane gave St George’s Stallions a 1-0 win over Hamilton Parish in the Masters Knockout Cup final at Bernard Park last weekend.

In the consolation final, St George’s All-stars beat Young Men’s Social Club 3-1. William Richardson gave St George’s the lead in the eighteenth minute before Erick Dunkley equalised six minutes later.

Two goals midway in the second half sealed the win for the All-Stars, with Derek Wright scoring with a shot from outside the box in the 67th minute. Ben Phipps scored the third goal.
