Haiti squad sprinkled with pro experience

Haiti striker Duckens Nazon is on loan at Scottish Premiership side St Mirren

Haiti have named a 23-man squad brimming with professional experience as they prepare for their Concacaf Gold Cup opener against Bermuda next month.

Coach Kyle Lightbourne’s side face Haiti in their group B opener at the Estadio Nacional in San José, Costa Rica, on June 16 before playing Costa Rica, at the Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, on June 20 and Nicaragua at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey, on June 24.

Haiti, who finished top of the Nations League qualifying standings, will carry an attacking threat in the form of Duckens Nazon, who has spent the season on loan at St Mirren.

The striker managed just one goal in ten appearance for the Scottish Premiership side, having started the season at top-flight Belgium team St Truiden, where he failed to score in five appearances.

He has, however, been far more prolific for his country, especially during the Nations League qualifiers, scoring six goals in the two games he played, including five in a 13-0 win over Sint Maarten.

Supporting Nazon in attack will be Benjamin Michel, who has played three games for Major League Soccer side Orlando City this season.

Haiti’s other MLS players are midfielders Zachary Herivaux, on loan at USL Championship side Birmingham Legion, where Bermudian Khano Smith is an assistant coach, from New England Revolution, and Derrick Ettienne, of New York Red Bulls.

Defender Jems Geffrard plays in the USL Championship for Fresco FC while Meschack Jerome turns out for El Pasco Locomotive.

Haiti have several players with experience of European leagues, with Herve Bazile playing for French League 2 side Le Harve, and Frantzdy Pierriot turning out for top-flight Belgium outfit Mouscron. Bryan Alceus plays for French fourth-tier team C’Chartres.

Haiti’s defence also boasts players with professional knowhow, with Carlens Arcus playing for French League 2 side Auxerre and Ricardo Adé plying his trade at Chilean second-tier side Magallanes.

Two of Haiti’s goalkeepers play professionally, Isaac Roaud, with French League 2 outfit Vannes and Josué Duverger, who is yet to play a first-team game for Portuguese top-fight side Vitoria Setubal.

Johny Placide, Haiti’s most experienced goalkeeper, previously played for Oldham Athletic in the Sky Bet League Two and French side Guingamp.
