Nahki Wells scored his first goals of the season for loan club Queens Park Rangers as they secured a thrilling 5-4 win on penalty kicks against Bristol City in the Carabao Cup first round at home at the newly renamed Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium last night.
The match finished 3-3 after 90 minutes before QPR kept their composure during the shootout as Wells converted their fifth kick to make it 3-1.
Wells, back at the club for a second season-long loan spell, was handed his first start of the campaign and responded with a lively performance, scoring the 15th minute equaliser after City took the lead two minutes earlier through Famara Diedhiou.
Wellsís effort in the first half from outside the box found the bottom right-hand corner following a pass from Matthew Smith.
Ilias Chair put QPR in front for the first time in the 26th minute when he found the net from inside the box.
Bristol City made it 2-2 in the 41st minute when Jack Huntís left-footed effort from the right side of the box found the far top corner.
City reclaimed the lead in the 59th minute when Liam Walsh scored from a free kick into the top left corner.
QPR went close to equalising in the 81st minute when Wells hit the crossbar with a shot from outside the box.
However, four minutes later QPR were presented the perfect opportunity to level once again as Wells earned a penalty when he was fouled by Walsh.
Ryan Manning stepped up and converted the spot-kick, placing his left-footed shot into the top corner.
Wells looked to snatch victory in the 90th minute, but his 35-yard goalbound effort was blocked.
Mark Warburtonís side will play Portsmouth at home in the second round during the week of August 26.
QPR and Bristol City will meet again in the Sky Bet Championship on Saturday when the London-based outfit make the trip to Ashton Gate.
